VIN Lookup FAQs

What is a VIN, and what does it tell me about a vehicle?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) identifies an individual vehicle. For vehicles covered by the modern U.S. VIN standard, it contains 17 characters. Decoding the VIN can reveal information such as the manufacturer, model year, engine and manufacturing plant. Older-vehicles may use different identification formats.

Where can I find my vehicle’s VIN?

On most cars, the VIN can be found at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side or on a label in the driver’s door opening. It may also appear on your vehicle title, registration documents and insurance documents. Locations vary by vehicle; check the owner’s manual if necessary.

Can a vehicle’s VIN change?

A vehicle’s manufacturer-assigned VIN normally remains the same throughout its life. Official procedures exist for assigning identification numbers in certain circumstances. If the VIN is missing, appears altered or does not match the documents, seek advice from the relevant vehicle registration authority.

How accurate are the VIN results?

XVEA uses VIN decoding data supplied by vehicle manufacturers to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Results depend on the completeness and accuracy of that data, so some details may be missing or incorrect. Confirm important specifications with the vehicle manufacturer.

How do I use the VIN lookup tool?

Enter your vehicle’s 17-character VIN into the lookup box and hit the submit button to see the available results.

Is the VIN lookup free to use?

Yes. XVEA’s VIN lookup is free to use. Optional vehicle history reports linked from this website are provided by a separate third-party service and may require payment.

Which vehicles and countries does the tool cover?

The tool primarily covers vehicles intended for sale or use in the United States, including vehicles manufactured in other countries for the U.S. market.

For UK based vehicles, use VIN Report UK for specific local results including MOT history.

Vehicles intended solely for other markets may return limited information or no results.

What information will the VIN lookup show?

Results may include the manufacturer, make, model, model year, body type, engine, fuel type and manufacturing plant. Available information varies by vehicle and depends on the data submitted by its manufacturer through a 565 submittals process to NHTSA.

Where do the VIN results come from?

The report combines vehicle data from the following sources with checks performed by XVEA:

Why is my VIN not recognized?

Check that you have entered the VIN correctly and included all 17 characters. A VIN may not be recognized because of a typing error, limited manufacturer data, an older vehicle or a vehicle intended for a market outside the United States.

Does the tool support older vehicles?

NHTSA’s VIN decoding service is intended primarily for model years 1981 onward. Coverage is more limited for model years 1980–1994, and its vPIC database does not include pre-1980 vehicle data. Older vehicles may therefore return limited information or no results.

Does the lookup show the vehicle’s exact trim, engine and fitted options?

Engine details and trim information may be available, depending on the vehicle manufacturer’s data. The lookup does not provide a complete factory build sheet or guarantee a list of every option fitted to the individual vehicle. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to confirm its original specification.

Does the lookup include vehicle recalls or safety ratings?

The report may show the latest NHTSA recall record returned for the vehicle’s make, model and model year, along with available NCAP safety ratings. These results may not apply to your specific vehicle. A recall record does not confirm whether your vehicle is affected or whether a repair has been completed.

Does it show accident history, mileage, previous owners or whether a vehicle is stolen?

No. XVEA’s VIN lookup provides vehicle identification and specification information, rather than a vehicle history report. For a separate history report, you can visit our partner - carVertical History Check - charges and data availability depend on that service.

Can I use a registration or license plate number instead of a VIN?

No, the VIN is the primary lookup method and is considered the most accurate way to check a vehicle. Forensic services use the VIN for investigations due to this robust accuracy, as do we.

Is my VIN stored when I perform a lookup?

We store the VIN, vehicle make and model year for technical research and service testing. These records are deleted after 30 days.

What should I do if the results do not match my vehicle?

First, check the VIN against the vehicle and its documents, then repeat the lookup. If the details still differ, contact NHTSA for advice.

Can I look up a motorcycle VIN?

Yes. Motorcycle VINs can be decoded where suitable manufacturer data is available. As with cars and trucks, this provides identification and specification information rather than vehicle history.

Is there an XVEA API available?

XVEA does not currently offer a public API.

Is there a VIN report service for UK based vehicles?

Yes. Visit our UK focused VIN report service - VIN Report UK - with MOT and vehicle information checks included.

What is the X-Vehicles Engineering Association (XVEA)?

It is an unincorporated association think-tank made up of engineering industry professionals dedicated to advancing current and forthcoming low-carbon vehicle solutions, including electric-powered and experimental Eco-powered engines, as well as associated powertrain technologies.

An Engineering White Paper (/181223/v1.02/r0.04/) was published in 2023 titled: Advancements in Electric Vehicle Technologies: An Exploration of Solar and Kinetic Energy Harvesting for Enhanced Power Source Efficiency and Sustainability.
